What is fragility?</h3>\n<p>Most of us intuitively understand fragility. Nassim Taleb puts it as</p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>...fragility was simply <em>vulnerability to the volatality of things that affect it</em></p>\n</blockquote>\n<p>That is,</p>\n<ul>\n<li>when Thing 1 depends on Thing 2</li>\n<li>if Thing 2 varies crazily, very moody Thing 2</li>\n<li>and Thing 1 gets affected negatively by Thing 2's variations</li>\n<li>then Thing 1 is fragile to Thing 2.</li>\n</ul>\n<p>Here is how I understand it: My self-worth(Thing 1) depends on the feedback-response-opinion-mood(Thing 2) from my friend-peer-boss-partner-child--network...</p>\n<p>When the feedback is positive, I feel really good about myself. When the feedback is meh, my feelings about myself don't really change. And when the feedback is negative, I feel that I am a pile of dung.</p>\n<p>Here, my self-worth is fragile to feedback.</p>\n<p>And, Nassim says</p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>fragile is what is hurt a lot more by extreme events than by a succession of intermediate ones</p>\n</blockquote>\n<p>A really scathing put-down has me immobile in self-pity for a long time, and affects everything else - causing a downward spiral - much much more than a bunch of slightly insulting remarks.</p>\n<p>༛༛ ༛ ༛༺༻༛ ༛ ༛༛</p>\n<h3 id=\"2-what-is-antifragile\"><a href=\"#2-what-is-antifragile\" aria-label=\"2 what is antifragile permalink\" class=\"anchor\"><svg aria-hidden=\"true\" focusable=\"false\" height=\"16\" version=\"1.1\" viewBox=\"0 0 16 16\" width=\"16\"><path fill-rule=\"evenodd\" d=\"M4 9h1v1H4c-1.5 0-3-1.69-3-3.5S2.55 3 4 3h4c1.45 0 3 1.69 3 3.5 0 1.41-.91 2.72-2 3.25V8.59c.58-.45 1-1.27 1-2.09C10 5.22 8.98 4 8 4H4c-.98 0-2 1.22-2 2.5S3 9 4 9zm9-3h-1v1h1c1 0 2 1.22 2 2.5S13.98 12 13 12H9c-.98 0-2-1.22-2-2.5 0-.83.42-1.64 1-2.09V6.25c-1.09.53-2 1.84-2 3.25C6 11.31 7.55 13 9 13h4c1.45 0 3-1.69 3-3.5S14.5 6 13 6z\"></path></svg></a>2. What is Antifragile?</h3>\n<p><em>Fragility</em> and it's opposite <em>Antifragility</em> lie on a spectrum - the middle point being <em>Resilience</em>.</p>\n<p><a href=\"http://year-of-the-turtle.suprada.com/images/spectrum-of-fragile.png\"> <img src=\"http://year-of-the-turtle.suprada.com/images/spectrum-of-fragile.png\" title=\"Spectrum of Fragility\" width=\"580\">\n</a></p>\n<p>When I am <em>Resilient</em>, the feedback from the society does not make a difference either way. I take the positive feedback, and the negative feedback, let them wash over me and let them go.</p>\n<p>And when I am <strong>Antifragile</strong>, the volatility acutally helps me, makes me better, gives me super powers.</p>\n<p>So in the case of self-worth and feedback, what may Antifragile look like?</p>\n<p>I see the range of feedback I get, the glowing positive ones and the crush-my-soul negative ones and everything in between. I can try to figure out the pattern in the feedback. Might this feedback be valid? Is everyone giving me the same feedback? If so, I can consider making a change to address that feedback.</p>\n<p>If there is no pattern, then I can think about why this particular feedback comes from this person/type of person? Are there any other dynamics, other variables which are affecting this? (Like the person was hungry when they said this? Or associates from a certain part of life feel this way?) I can then decide to pay attention to it or not.</p>\n<p>In other words, when the feedback ranges from positive to negative, my self-worth always improves - either because of the positive nature of the feedback or because I know that I am improving and will be better because of this negative feedback.</p>\n<p>That's being Antifragile.</p>\n<p>༛༛ ༛ ༛༺༻༛ ༛ ༛༛</p>\n<p><a href=\"https://www.artic.edu/artworks/187053/ten-thousand-acres-of-lotus\"> <img src=\"http://year-of-the-turtle.suprada.com/images/Li_Huasheng-ten-thousand-acres-of-lotus.jpg\" title=\"Ten Thousand Acres of Lotus by Li Huasheng\" width=\"580\">\n</a>\n<a href=\"https://www.artic.edu/artworks/187053/ten-thousand-acres-of-lotus\">Ten Thousand Acres of Lotus by Li Huasheng</a></p>\n<p>༛༛ ༛ ༛༺༻༛ ༛ ༛༛</p>\n<h3 id=\"3-how-do-you-detect-fragility\"><a href=\"#3-how-do-you-detect-fragility\" aria-label=\"3 how do you detect fragility permalink\" class=\"anchor\"><svg aria-hidden=\"true\" focusable=\"false\" height=\"16\" version=\"1.1\" viewBox=\"0 0 16 16\" width=\"16\"><path fill-rule=\"evenodd\" d=\"M4 9h1v1H4c-1.5 0-3-1.69-3-3.5S2.55 3 4 3h4c1.45 0 3 1.69 3 3.5 0 1.41-.91 2.72-2 3.25V8.59c.58-.45 1-1.27 1-2.09C10 5.22 8.98 4 8 4H4c-.98 0-2 1.22-2 2.5S3 9 4 9zm9-3h-1v1h1c1 0 2 1.22 2 2.5S13.98 12 13 12H9c-.98 0-2-1.22-2-2.5 0-.83.42-1.64 1-2.09V6.25c-1.09.53-2 1.84-2 3.25C6 11.31 7.55 13 9 13h4c1.45 0 3-1.69 3-3.5S14.5 6 13 6z\"></path></svg></a>3. How to create antifragility?</h3>\n<p>So how to become antifragile? This also, we all seem to know intuitively - give yourself more options. Optionality might also be familiar to you as redundancies, buffers, fail-safes, spaces, pauses, diversification... depending on the field you look at.</p>\n<p>You look at the above analogy of self-worth -- when being antifragile, what you are doing is creating multiple options, multiple ways of reacting on receiving feedback.</p>\n<p>In the realm of productivity, there is the <a href=\"https://cardinalatwork.stanford.edu/engage/news/how-pause-can-improve-your-productivity\">importance of pause</a> in productivity, saying <a href=\"https://sivers.org/hellyeah\">'Hell Yeah!' or 'No', and nothing in between</a></p>\n<p>In the economic world, you see the impact of the COVID-19 on the super-efficient supply-chains of the world - making the economy fragile.<a href=\"https://www.marketplace.org/2020/02/27/justintime-manufacturing-model-challenged-coronavirus/\">Here's the article from marketplace</a></p>\n<p>You see this in the <a href=\"https://aeon.co/ideas/there-is-a-better-way-to-parent-than-the-nuclear-family\">criticism of the nuclear family</a> and the rise of alloparenting - adding optionality in caregivers (in form of the extended family)</p>\n<p>༛༛ ༛ ༛༺༻༛ ༛ ༛༛</p>\n<p><a href=\"https://www.artic.edu/artworks/15846/bird-from-the-book-of-poems-milestones-of-the-season-shibunshu-kisetsu-hyo\"> <img src=\"http://year-of-the-turtle.suprada.com/images/onchi_koshiro-The_bird.jpg\" title=\"Bird, from the book of poems &#x201C;Milestones of the Season&#x201D; by Onchi Koshiro\" width=\"580\">\n</a>\n<a href=\"https://www.artic.edu/artworks/15846/bird-from-the-book-of-poems-milestones-of-the-season-shibunshu-kisetsu-hyo\">Bird, from the book of poems “Milestones of the Season” by Onchi Koshiro</a></p>\n<p>༛༛ ༛ ༛༺༻༛ ༛ ༛༛</p>\n<h3 id=\"5-what-would-antifragility-look-like\"><a href=\"#5-what-would-antifragility-look-like\" aria-label=\"5 what would antifragility look like permalink\" class=\"anchor\"><svg aria-hidden=\"true\" focusable=\"false\" height=\"16\" version=\"1.1\" viewBox=\"0 0 16 16\" width=\"16\"><path fill-rule=\"evenodd\" d=\"M4 9h1v1H4c-1.5 0-3-1.69-3-3.5S2.55 3 4 3h4c1.45 0 3 1.69 3 3.5 0 1.41-.91 2.72-2 3.25V8.59c.58-.45 1-1.27 1-2.09C10 5.22 8.98 4 8 4H4c-.98 0-2 1.22-2 2.5S3 9 4 9zm9-3h-1v1h1c1 0 2 1.22 2 2.5S13.98 12 13 12H9c-.98 0-2-1.22-2-2.5 0-.83.42-1.64 1-2.09V6.25c-1.09.53-2 1.84-2 3.25C6 11.31 7.55 13 9 13h4c1.45 0 3-1.69 3-3.5S14.5 6 13 6z\"></path></svg></a>5.
